Constitutional Reform Demonstrations Held in Various Towns
24 March 2014
Demonstrations calling for constitutional reform were held in Mandalay, Mandalay Division’s Pyin Oo Lwin, Rangoon’s Tamwe and Dawbon townships and in Sagaing Division’s Depayin town on Sunday, the Myanma Freedom Daily reports. The paper said the demonstrations in Mandalay involved more than 1,000 people. Aung San Suu Kyi’s National League for Democracy and the 88 Generation Students have been calling for changes to the military-drafted 2008 charter. It is widely seen as undemocratic as it guarantees the Burma Army a quarter of all legislative seats, while it prevents Suu Kyi from becoming president because her sons hold British citizenship.
