Ongoing clashes between the Shan State Progress Party/Shan State Army (SSPP/SSA) and Burmese government troops have prevented the shipment of 40 tons of rice from Japan’s Nippon Foundation to the Shan rebel group’s Wanhai Headquarters, reports the Shan Herald Agency for News. The rice, purchased by the Lashio office of the government’s Department of Border Areas and National Races Development Affairs with money provided by the Nippon Foundation, has not been delivered because of clashes in and around the village of Wanwap, in southern Shan State’s Kehsi Township, according to a spokesperson for the SSPP/SSA. The group has urged the Nippon Foundation to give it cash so it can purchase the rice itself, the spokesperson added.
