China Shows Unease with US-Burma Detente

A senior Chinese diplomat has expressed concern that US moves to improve relations with Burma appear to be aimed at constraining Beijing’s influence. On Wednesday, Chinese Vice Foreign Minister Cui Tiankai told a news briefing that “it is up to the United States to explain” why it has suddenly decided to engage with Burma after decades of isolating the country. “China has never seen its friendly and cooperative relationship with Myanmar, or any other country, as excluding the interests of the United States, and we hope the United States also approaches this matter in the same spirit,” Cui said.
