The blind Chinese activist Chen Guangcheng, who fled to the US in April, has called on new Communist Party chief Xi Jinping to follow Burma-style democratic reforms or risk political upheaval, Reuters reports. The release of Aung San Suu Kyi and the reforms initiated by President Thein Sein show how China could pursue a transition to democratic government, he said. “Thein Sein’s open mind won him support from Myanmar’s people and recognition from the world. Even Thein Sein can do it, yet Xi Jinping doesn’t. Obviously it’s not that Xi couldn’t do it, but simply that he won’t,” Chen said.
