China’s state media on Wednesday denounced suggestions by blind rights activist Chen Guangcheng, who this week called on incoming Chinese President Xi Jingping to follow Burma-style democratic reforms. An editorial in the Communist Party’s Global Times called his appeal “a typical preachy tirade on China’s human rights” that “was barely noticed by Chinese netizens.” It said Burma’s reforms generated public interest in China, but “among mainstream Chinese, few would agree that Myanmar’s political progress is ahead of China’s.” Burma “still faces great uncertainties in terms of reform, whereas China has witnessed three decades of reform which has brought rapid growth,” it added.
