Burma has reached agreements with its two largest neighbors to develop the country’s arable land and increase rice exports. According to a report by Mizzima, China has agreed to provide fertilizer for paddy fields in Burma and buy the harvested rice at local prices. The venture will most likely involve the cultivation of paddy fields in the Irrawaddy Delta and Pegu Division, said representatives from the Farmers Development Public Company. The report also mentions that India, in conjunction with the Asia United Rice Company and the Farmers Development Party, has made a similar agreement to develop 100,000 acres of rice paddies on Burmese soil.
