Myanmar Connect 2013, a conference focusing on telecommunications in Burma, was held last week in Naypyidaw, offering a chance for international telecommunications companies interested in the country’s fledgling telecoms sector to meet with government and other local stakeholders. Speakers included Petter Furberg, CEO of the local unit of Telenor, one of two foreign companies granted a license to operate a mobile network in Burma this past June. On the sidelines of the event, the Myanmar Times quoted Myanmar Posts and Telecommunications chief Aung Maw as saying the state-run firm would partner with a “foreign giant” as Telenor and Qatar-based Ooredoo bring competition to a sector formerly monopolized by MPT.
