Burmese rice producers have welcomed Japan’s decision to import 5,000 tons of their produce. Secretary of the Myanmar Rice Millers and Producers Association Myo Aung Kyaw told The Irrawaddy that previously Burmese rice did not meet Japan’s high quality standards for rice import. “They care for health and they have their techniques to test the standards of rice” import, said Myo Aung Kyaw. “I think the Burmese exporters have to face this [import requirement] as a main challenge,” he added. The Myanmar Agribusiness Public Company won a bid to supply 5,000 metric tons of rice to Japan at a price of US $490 per ton, state-run newspaper The New Light of Myanmar reported recently.
