Thailand’s Foreign Ministry said that 83 Thais were among the 514 prisoners released by Burma’s government on Monday, according to a report by The Bangkok Post. The Thai nationals had been arrested in July for encroaching on Burmese territory near Kawthaung, in the country’s far south near the Thai city of Ranong. Thai diplomats based in Burma were in Kawthaung on Tuesday to arrange for the released prisoners’ return to Thailand, the newspaper reported. Another nine Thais who were found guilty of clearing land on the Burmese side of the border remain in prison in Kawthaung.
