Burma is pushing hard to become a member of the Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (EITI), the country’s minister of mines said at a seminar in Naypyidaw on Sunday, according to state media reports. The seminar, held after a meeting earlier in the week between President Thein Sein and the visiting chair of the EITI board, Clare Short, was attended by leaders of the EITI office in Burma, as well as businesspeople involved in the mineral, gems and jewelry and gold industries. Minister of Mines Dr. Myint Aung said that joining of EITI would ensure that Burma effectively uses profits from these industries in a transparent manner that benefits the people.
