Burma’s government will introduce a new permanent residence system for foreigners, Chinese news agency Xinhua reports. It said Minister of Immigration Khin Yi informed lawmakers of the plans at the start of the new Parliament session in Naypyidaw. The agency reported few details of the new permanent residence system. The current system is considered dysfunctional and few, if any, people have successfully applied for permanent residence status. The minister reportedly also said that the government plans to introduce a system of granting online visas, and that Burma wants to sign visa exemption agreements with 16 countries, including 10 Asean nations.
