A ban on selling, chewing and spitting betel nut went into effect in Papua New Guinea’s capital, Port Moresby, this month, local media reported. According to the PNG Post-Courier, anyone transporting or distributing betel nut will face fines from the start of next month, after a push to ban the popular habit by Governor Powes Parkop. “My determination is strong and firm. We are not stopping people from chewing and selling betel nut but we are taking or relocating their activities to the outskirts of the city,” Parkop told the PNG Post-Courier.
