Some Bago residents were prevented on Tuesday from commemorating the 25th anniversary of Burma’s pro-democracy uprising, Mizzima reports. About 20 people attempted to pay tribute at the township’s “Memorial Pillar,” erected to honor those killed in the government crackdown on the 1988 demonstrations. The pillar was reportedly not among eight sites where commemorations were to be permitted. “The chief police major of Bago Township police seized our wreaths and threw them into their car when we laid wreaths at Memorial Pillar. We think we have the right to pay tribute to our fallen martyrs without seeking their permission,” one commemorator said.
