Australia is easing some sanctions against Burma following the formerly military-run Southeast Asian nation’s pledge to move toward democracy. Foreign Minister Bob Carr said on Monday that Australia will lift financial and travel restrictions for more than 260 people in Burma, including President Thein Sein. Carr said the move was in response to Burma’s recent political reforms. Australia will keep its arms embargo and sanctions will remain against around 130 people in Burma, including military officials. On Sunday, Norway also announced that it was suspending sanctions.―AP
