An Arakanese historian who has written extensively on the status of Arakan State’s Rohingya Muslim minority received a hero’s welcome when he arrived in Rangoon earlier this week. According to the Narinjara news agency, around 100 supporters greeted Dr. Aye Chan Myat, a Japan-based academic, at Yangon International Airport on Sept. 15. He was in Burma to attend a conference on “National Identity and Citizenship in 21st Century Myanmar,” sponsored by Myanmar Egress. Highly respected by his fellow Arakanese, he is the controversial author of a book on the Rohingya called “Influx Virus.”
