1 June 2012
Three men were arrested in Rambree Township, Arakan State, on Tuesday for allegedly raping and murdering a local woman. The arrests, reported by the Narinjara news agency, came after a crowd of nearly 1,000 people gathered at the the police station in the village of Kyauknimaw to demand that the police take action. The incident has raised fears of communal violence, as the suspects were from the predominantly Muslim village of Kyaukhtaran. Police had to save two other Muslim youths suspected of involvement in the crime after they were threatened by the angry mob, according to local sources.
