A local chapter of the 88 Generation Students group has accused the head of a village in Mergui District, Tenasserim Division of trying to “sell” 20 villagers as workers without their consent, according to a report by Mizzima. The villagers claim they were offered jobs at a palm oil plantation in Kyunzu Township, but were instead taken to an area controlled by the Karen National Union (KNU), where arrangements were made to transport them to another area. The victims later asked for help from KNU officials in the area and left the area on Aug. 15.
