Myanmar’s regime appointed Major General Htein Win as its navy commander-in-chief following the alleged interrogation of his predecessor, according to a Naypyitaw source.
Former navy chief Vice Admiral Zwe Win Myint resigned in early July after around six months in the role.
The source told The Irrawaddy on Friday: “After receiving the secret appointment letter, Maj Gen Htein Win from the Thanlyin cantonment in Yangon left for Naypyitaw to receive his promotion.”
The regime has made no announcement.
Zwe Win Myint was appointed in early January after his predecessor, Moe Aung, was transferred to a ministerial post and appointed as a national security adviser.
The navy soon after began shelling the Arakan Army along the Rakhine State coast.
In June, the navy was blamed when four relatives of retreating border guards drowned when their boat capsized off the coast in Maunder Township, Rakhine State, near the Bangladeshi border. The boat allegedly capsized after coming under fire from a naval landing craft that was supposedly sent to rescue them.
A junta soldier filming the incident says the naval vessel abandoned the troops and their families, only rescuing some of the officers.
Zwe Win Myint has allegedly been detained and interrogated by the regime.
The Irrawaddy could not independently verify the reports.
