A 19-year-old woman was killed in Mandalay on Sunday night as Myanmar’s security forces fired on a couple riding a motorbike home after work.
The shooting occurred at around 9pm after curfew. A bullet appears to have hit Ma Htet Htet Win’s husband, who was riding the bike, in his abdomen before killing his passenger, according to the rescue team.
The husband tried to reach medics with his serious injury but Ma Htet Htet Win fell off the bike on the way. The rescue team reported that he said the soldiers told them to stop and fired as they rode away.
A rescuer, who retrieved Ma Htet Htet Win’s body, said it was a difficult process to reach to her, carry her to their vehicle and drive her home, taking about 20 minutes as the team had to hide from the security forces.
“The streets are like killing fields with soldiers randomly shooting civilians, including medics and volunteers. We had to hide in the dark to reach her,” he said.
Ma Htet Htet Win was dead when they reached her. The rescue worker said she suffered a head injury, presumably after falling off the bike. Her husband had an operation on his wound.
Civilians have been killed during day and night raids by the security forces on residential areas, including a 25-year-old in Bhamo, Kachin State, who was shot dead early on Sunday morning.
