The fertile Irrawaddy Delta makes agriculture the backbone of Irrawaddy Division’s economy, and as such, four parties claiming to represent the voices of farmers are likely to get traction among its voters, 86 percent of whom live in rural constitutencies.

Irrawaddy Division went solidly for the Union Solidarity and Development Party (USDP) in 2010, but the National League for Democracy (NLD) won five of the five Union Parliament seats up for grabs in the 2012 by-election.

Irrawaddy Division returns 26 lawmakers to the Union Parliament’s Lower House and 12 to the Upper House. The regional legislature is made up of 54 elected parliamentarians, including two ethnic affairs representatives, and 18 appointed military MPs.
