A 2010 general election was widely viewed as flawed, with the military-backed USDP winning more than 75 percent of seats in a poll that nonetheless marked the beginning of a series of political reforms. USDP lawmaker and former No. 4 in the preceding military regime Thein Sein enacted a series of reforms as president that prompted the lifting of Western sanctions.
