Mobile phone companies Telenor and Ooredoo have finally been awarded their licenses to operate in Burma, a senior official at the Myanmar Investment Commission reportedly said. The companies, from Norway and Qatar, respectively, were the winners of a tender that concluded in July 2013 to be the first two private telecoms operators in Burma. According to Reuters, a report in the Burmese-language Voice Daily said Monday the licenses were awarded last week. The 15-year operating licenses were awarded on the condition the companies invest heavily in improving Burma’s poor telecommunications infrastructure.
