In an open letter addressed to Burmese opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi, a Kachin organization based in the US said that it would not be attending a ceremony to honor her with a Congressional Gold Medal. The Kachin Alliance USA released the letter on Tuesday, a day before Suu Kyi received the award, which is the highest civilian honor granted by US lawmakers. Citing the suffering of civilians displaced by more than a year of conflict in Kachin State, the group said it would be “inappropriate for us to rejoice and celebrate” at this time, according to a report by the Kachin News Group.
