The UN refugee agency UNHCR has provided relief supplies to thousands of flood victims in southeastern Burma, according a report by Reliefweb. An estimated 40,000 people were forced to leave their homes when heavy rains in late July and early August caused severe flooding in Karen and Mon states, as well as Tenasserim Division. Karen State was the worst affected, with more than 33,000 people displaced. From Aug. 7-29, UNHCR worked with local authorities and the Myanmar Red Cross Society to distribute basic necessities to around 16,400 people, including many who had previously been uprooted by conflict between Burma’s government army and ethnic rebels.
