UN Provides Tents to Arakan Refugees

The UN’s refugee agency has begun providing several thousand tents to people displaced by the violence between Muslims and Buddhist communities in Arakan State, with the first of two airlift shipments arriving in Rangoon from Dubai on Friday, Radio Australia reported. The first shipment contained 2,000 family tents that were transported over land to refugee camps near the state capital Sittwe. UN High Commissioner for Refugees Adrian Edwards said the tents could shelter around 17,500 people, adding that an estimated total of 115,000—mostly displaced Muslim Rohingyas—are in need of help.
