The UN Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) has teamed up with Burma’s national police force to train border control officers in the fight against trafficking, the UNODC said on Monday. The UN office held two training courses—in the east Burma border town of Tachileik and the south Burma town of Kawthoung, both notorious smuggling points—with assistance from instructors from Australia, Canada, the United Kingdom and the United States. The training was part of an UNODC-supported counter-smuggling initiative known as the Partnership Against Transnational-crime through Regional Organized Law enforcement (PATROL), which Burma’s government joined in January.
