The UK’s Guardian newspaper said that Burmese opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi was asked if she would be available to light the Olympic flame at a ceremony to mark the opening of the 2012 Olympic Games in London on July 27. The newspaper’s sports correspondent said that Suu Kyi was approached by ceremony director Danny Boyle during her visit to Britain last month, but she declined the offer, saying she planned to spend the summer in Burma. Also mentioned as a potential candidate for the honor was former world boxing champion Muhammad Ali.
