Rangoon to Phase Out “Big Belly” Buses

Rangoon municipality has decided to ban Burma’s decades-old Chevrolet buses in order to relieve the city’s congested traffic and plans to bring in new Japanese-made vehicles to phase out the old “big belly” buses, NBC News reported from Rangoon. The Canada-built Chevy C-15’s were left by Allied forces after World War II and were later converted for use in public transport. The old buses are right-hand drive, like in the UK, but have been plying the right side of Burma’s crumbling roads since the early 1970s, when former dictator Gen Ne Win forced Burmese traffic users to suddenly switch lanes from left to right.
