A report released by an ethnic Palaung youth group on Wednesday has highlighted continuing Burmese army abuses associated with the controversial Shwe oil and gas pipelines to China. The Ta’ang Students and Youth Organization (TSYO) said that almost 3,000 ethnic Palaung (or Ta’ang) in northwestern Shan State have been displaced by fighting along the route of the pipelines. “Those refugees have no support, no shelter, and the UN doesn’t know about them,” said the TSYO’s Lway Aye Nang, adding that world leaders have ignored these issues in their praise for recent reforms in Burma.
