Norwegian Prime Minister Jens Stoltenberg, in Burma over the weekend to open a new embassy, has pledged to continue supporting the country’s ongoing peace process. In a joint statement issued with Burmese President Thein Sein, Stoltenberg commended the president’s reforms and said that “Norway and the international community stand ready to support the peace efforts and further democratization in Myanmar.” Earlier this year, Norway began funding the Myanmar Peace Support Initiative, which aims to strengthen ceasefire agreements reached between the government and ethnic armed groups.
