Ministries Ordered to Repay Misappropriated Funds

Burmese President Thein Sein ordered government ministries to repay tens of thousands of dollars “embezzled” by staff, after the auditor general found dozens of cases of “misuse and dishonest actions” in 15 ministries. According to a report by the national budget watchdog, a total of more than US $230,000 was stolen from government coffers by ministry staff over the 2011-12 fiscal year. However, the total amount that was “misused” by the ministries came to nearly $70 million, according to reports last week, when the auditor general submitted his report his findings to Burma’s Union Parliament.
