Buthidaung and Maungdaw, the two townships in northern Arakan State that bore the brunt of an outbreak of communal violence between Arakanese Buddhists and Rohingya Muslims earlier this month, have been cut off from each other by landslides, according to the Arakanese news service Narinjara. Heavy rains in the area have caused severe flooding, adding to the woes of tens of thousands displaced by the riots. The road connecting the two townships—which is also the only land route to Bangladesh—was washed out by the floods, according to local sources.
