A Hong Kong lawmaker says that recent high-profile reports of abuses committed against foreign maids are unlikely to deter Burma from sending domestic servants. According to a report by the South China Morning Post, HK legislator Felix Chung Kwok-pan said after a meeting with Burmese Labor Minister Aye Myint on Monday that “Myanmar still finds the plan attractive.” Referring to recent reports of severe abuses inflicted on 23-year-old Indonesian maid Erwiana Sulistyaningsih by her employer, he added: “I don’t think the widely reported case of Erwiana will be a big problem.” The report also identifies Chung as an investor in Burma’s garment-manufacturing, which employs large numbers of young women.
