An Egyptian political party linked to the Jama’a al-Islamiya Sunni Islamist movement has called for protests against Burma’s government over its handling of recent violence in Arakan State. The Construction and Development Party urged its supporters to protest outside the Burmese embassy in Cairo on Friday to highlight the plight of Muslim Rohingyas, who rights groups say have been targeted by the authorities and ethnic Arakanese Buddhists intent on driving them out of the country. Violence between the two communities has abated since riots broke out in June, but thousands remain homeless.
