Dawei SEZ Agreement Delayed

The agreement between Burma and Italian-Thai Development Plc over the development of the Dawei special economic zone has been pushed back to February 2013, as Burma’s government awaits more details on the plan, according to The Bangkok Post. The agreement was scheduled to be signed in August. The project—which was to include a deep-sea port on Burma’s southeast coast—has suffered from delays and has been scaled down in recent months. During a Dec.5 town hall meeting, villagers living near Dawei urged government officials to refrain from dam development in the area and called for more environmental and social impact studies, KIC News reports.
