Charity Donates $3.3 Million to Displaced in Kachin, Arakan States

More than 500,000 people have been displaced in Burma over the past two years, reports charity Plan International, which has launched a £2.2 million (US$3.3 million) aid plan to help victims in Kachin State and Arakan State. The UK-based charity said Monday that children were suffering most from conflicts between rebel groups and the national government, often walking through landmine-littered areas to reach school. About 140,000 people were displaced in Arakan State by communal violence last year between Buddhists and Muslims, while tens of thousands were displaced by renewed fighting between rebel groups and the government’s army in Kachin State.
