Conservationists have called on Burma to implement strict regulatory frameworks to protect the country’s biodiversity from large-scale infrastructure development projects, a science news website reported Tuesday. In a new study, scientists from the US-based Wildlife Conservation Society examined the effects of Burma’s economic development and climate change on vast swaths of natural forests and endangered species, Science Daily reported. The group said Burma’s biodiversity, protected by decades of international isolation under the former military regime, had since come under threat, and it recommended a planned expansion in existing protected areas for underrepresented ecosystems.
