Burma’s President Thein Sein said on Monday that his government has given up on any plan to develop nuclear programs despite cooperating with Russia in the mid-2000s, according to Asia News Network. He reportedly told visiting South Korean President Lee Myung-bak that Russia offered to build two 10-MW nuclear reactors for civilian, not military, use. However, Burma’s military junta did not push for the project due to its inability to manage it, he was quoted as saying by Lee’s security aide Kim Tae-hyo. Thein Sein told Lee that Burma has never cooperated with Pyongyang in terms of nuclear programs, and that Naypyidaw will observe UN Security Council Resolution 1874 banning Pyongyang’s long-range rocket launch, the report said.
