Burma’s beer production continues to rise and local brewers produced 27.5 million gallons of beer in the last fiscal year, which lasted from April 2013 to March 2014, Eleven Media reports. Data from the Ministry of National Planning and Economic Development show that beer production increased from 26 million gallons in 2012-2013, and from 20 million in 2011-2012. Burma’s growing beer market is being eyed by foreign brewers, such as Dutch giant Heineken, but continues to be dominated by military-owned conglomerate Union of Myanmar Economic Holdings. Imported beer and wine, meanwhile, are subject to heavy and complicated import duties.
