An Australian warship called at a Burmese port for the first time since WWII on Monday, according to state media reports. The Australian patrol vessel HMAS Childers, with a crew of 24 soldiers, made the port call at Thilawa, in Rangoon’s Thanlyin Township, as part of a cultural cooperation and experience exchange program between the two countries’ navies, state media reported on Tuesday. It will remain in Burma for four days before sailing on to Chittagong Port in Bangladesh, after which it will take part in a multinational naval exercise in the Bay of Bengal. The 56-meter vessel is normally used to patrol northern Australia to prevent people smuggling and poaching operations.
