Australian May Resume Defense Ties with Burma: PM

Australia is considering a resumption of defense ties with Burma’s military, Australian Prime Minister Julia Gillard revealed on Monday, according to a report by the Sydney Morning Herald. Gillard, who met with Burmese President, Thein Sein, yesterday on the sidelines of a regional summit in the Laotian capital Vientianne, also invited him to visit Australia next month—an invitation that he has accepted. Australia has already lifted most of its sanctions on Burma in response to reforms initiated last year, but Gillard said, “We have still got some decisions to make on defense cooperation.”
