A court in Sittwe sentenced two prominent members of the local ethnic Arakanese community to three months in prison on Tuesday for staging a protest in March against the resettlement of Rohingya Muslims. The two, Ma Nyo Aye and Kyaw Zaw Oo, had been found guilty of organizing a public rally without official permission, the Narinjara news agency reported. On March 7, around 3,000 people protested against plans to build permanent homes for Rohingyas displaced by last year’s communal violence. Ma Nyo Aye had earlier led a protest against Tomas Ojea Quintana, the UN special rapporteur on the human rights for Burma, accusing him of pro-Rohingya bias.
