BANGKOK — A Burmese Buddhist monk who called a UN human rights envoy a “whore” has violated his monastic code and could damage his religion, another prominent monk said on Tuesday, but he is unlikely to face censure.

U Wirathu denounced Yanghee Lee, the UN special rapporteur on human rights in Burma, in a speech in Rangoon on Friday, after she questioned draft laws that critics say discriminate against women and non-Buddhists.

“Just because you hold a position in the United Nations doesn’t make you an honorable woman. In our country, you are just a whore,” U Wirathu told a cheering crowd of several hundred people in Rangoon on Friday.

The monk also accused Lee of bias toward Rohingya Muslims, a stateless minority in western Burma’s Arakan State, which is also called Rakhine.

“You can offer your arse to the kalars if you so wish but you are not selling off our Rakhine State,” he said. Kalars is a derogatory word for people of South Asian descent.

His speech was condemned by U Thawbita, a leading member of the progressive Saffron Revolution Buddhist Monks Network in Mandalay, where U Wirathu is also based.

“The words used that day are very sad and disappointing. It is an act that could hurt Buddhism very badly,” U Thawbita told Reuters.

The network was formed by monks who helped lead the 2007 Saffron Revolution, a nationwide democracy uprising brutally crushed by the military. It is influential among educated Buddhists, but has little power.

A senior official at the Ministry of Religious Affairs told Reuters there were no plans to act against U Wirathu.

“Of course, he has the right to express his opinion but he shouldn’t have used these terms,” said the official, who requested anonymity due to the sensitivity of the issue. “It can tarnish the image of our religion among those who don’t really understand its essence.”

Famed for his fiery speeches, U Wirathu is affiliated with a radical Buddhist nationalist group whose monks preach that Muslims will one day overrun Burma. Buddhism is the country’s predominant religion and its monks are revered.

A quasi-civilian government now runs Burma after nearly half a century of hard-line military rule. But its reforms have been marred by deadly religious clashes, with rights activists warning that hate speech could foment further violence.

Lee responded indirectly to U Wirathu’s remarks in a statement released by her office on Monday.

“During my visit I was personally subjected to the kind of sexist intimidation that female human rights defenders experience when advocating on controversial issues,” she said.

  1. this guy is going crazy, he is hurting not only the Buddhism but all others too and mankind, before he create more disaster should get rid of him, he is just self made Monk, product of Myanmar Govt…it is shame for the whole Myanmar Nation !

    • Who ever he is He should be confined to the cells. This act and speech should not be a consensus for Buddhism and it is against Buddhist belief and practice. He should be de-robe with immediate effect.Too much (law ke) current social affairs incitement and never discussed nor preach (law kote tayar) about futurism for any staunch Buddhist should do .As a monk should not have Facebook account!.Bad bad example. What a shame to Buddhism and in particular Burma

    • Yes,U Sein, part of my life , I fought for human rights. Now, under the name of freedom of speech, this guy is destroying the nation with the impunity . I believe all my friends, who sacrificed their life in prison or jungle are not for that kind of anarchy.

  2. Time we Buddhists to wake up and follow REAL buddhist guidance and code of conduct taught to us by lord Buddha. Every monk have to vow the sermon (hundreds of them) before entering monastic life. ANY one breaking this vow is not a monk but a normal guy who just put on a yellow rob. And in this case this Wirathu is not a monk and is just filthy asshole which we should disrobe him. He disgrace our religion. Fellow buddhist, we don’t need to follow blindly any one, please look at the guidance code of monkhood.
I am for the protection of the religion and country but I am not extremist like this Wirathu guy or Muslim Jihadist. We have to respect other people’s belief. I am just against any person who want to force their religion and belief on us and to any one who wants to replace the democracy with Sharia.
Our buddhist reputation is tainted by this bastard who call someone a Whore and uses filthy languages that he can only find in brothels. Shame on him.
Fellow buddhist, are you going to pray and believe me if I just wear a yellow rob and told you that I am a monk? You should check if I am real monk and if I am following what Buddha teaches us. Don’t believe blindly.

  3. This so called monk is a creation of Thein Sein’s government to have hatred and divisions among Burmese people. Thein Sein government is using religion as a political tool to win the 2015 general elections and to discredit the NLD and Daw Aug Sn Suu Kyi. This foolish idiot should be in jail instead of spreading hatred. What are the Burmese authorities doing? They are happy when Burmese people are unhappy and frustrated. Thein Sein government must go so that this evil Wirathu will disappear from the face of the earth.

  4. Yes, we has a right to express his opinion, but it does not mean that he has any right to ABUSE others. This monk has clearly overstepped the limits of human decency.

And coming from the mouth of a Buddhist monk, his vulgar words give a bad image of Buddhism. It is indeed disgraceful and deplorable!

It is hugely damaging to our country, our people and our Buddhist religion – the very things he and his group claim to protect!

He is a disgrace to our President who once defended him as a “son of Buddha”.

I would think that repeated public abuse using vulgar language is an offense under our Criminal Code. IG of Police should please take note.

  5. Wirathu should be disrobe and action should be taken according to law, He is destroying the image of Buddhist religion and Buddhist monks around the world. what is the government doing? Is the Government with him to allow him to destroy the Buddhist religion, he is no monk, people should not pay respect to him. He has a foul mouth which no Buddhist will accept. DISROBE HIM AND TAKE ACTION BEFORE HE DESTROY RACIAL HARMONY IN MYANMAR.

  6. This monk has clearly breached the Code of Conduct for Buddhist Monkhood! He should be disrobed!

  7. unholy man with trash mouth.

  8. He is a self-made monk and product of fascist military regime. The regime is trying very hard to incite the racial brawls and fighting to derail the 2015 General election where the military could repeat the history of landslide defeat at the hand of NLD. Now this self-portrayed monk is getting over the line to discredit the basic principle of Buddhism. What he preached is no more of Buddhism any more. The reply by the UN Human Right chief is very simple, humble, civilized and truthful. It further damage the image of the fascist military regime. If they were lucky enough, they would pick up the 0.1 percent of popular vote in General election. Their true face of dirty minds are exposed by the help of this self-portrayed monk.

  9. It should be pointed out that Muslim men can marry women of different religions, be they Buddhists, Christians, Hindus, etc..on condition they convert to Islam. This is not the case for Muslim women. Firstly the Muslim men/fathers would never allow their daughters to marry a non Muslim man, ie a Buddhist . Secondly, the young unmarried Muslim women are kept away from different cultures other than theirs. They are not allowed to have normal relationship with men, notably men of other faiths and worse still they are not allowed to attend a secular school except in some very rare instances. This has been going on for generations virtually in every Muslim societies. This is the fact. My wife’s first cousin fell in love with a Buddhist but she was stopped from marrying him by her father and ended up with a arranged marriage to a Muslim man. It’
worth pointing out her mother was a Buddhist before she met her father who’s a Muslim of course.
Yet no human rights activists raised this important issue.
Over the years the Burmese Buddhists watched their women marrying Muslims and converted to Islam leading to explosion of Muslim population in Burma. We Burmese Buddhists are devout people and we can see what the future holds if this continues.
Muslim men needs to heed the warning written on the wall and provide a levelled playing field, if they want to coexist peacefully. Failure to do so will have catastrophic consequences for race relations in the near future. The Buddhist Burmese people and the government of Burma are only human and are not going sit idly and watch their two thousand years old religion and culture destroyed. Why should we? No sir, period.

    • I partly agree with you but as Buddhist, there are commandments that every monk has to follow and if one does not, he is not a monk but a guy wearing saffron. We should disrobe him. This is what Wirathu is. He is just an asshole promoting hates with foul mouth.
Actually muslims are religious abiding people. They are just following their interpretation of Koran (kill non muslim people as in Koran, all human are born muslim and we did not follow Koran so we are infidels…) like we follow Buddha’s teaching. This means Koran sucks.
We should find a legal peaceful way to protect non muslim women (Buddhist, Christian, Hindu, etc…) from muslim men. Look at those children in so called camps of Rohinya (this race is created by OIC), they are innocent and are just born in wrong race. If we treat them the current way, we no different from Nazi. We should step by step integrate them (different level of citizenship) into our society (we can’t keep 800,000 people in camps for eternity to be realistic), start to educate them to respect other people’s religion, belief and freedom of democracy (that democracy cannot be replaced by Sharia). Anyone acting against destroying democracy should loose their citizen rights (no voting, freedom of travel, etc..).
UN should also take note that local Arakans and Myanmar have our rights also, this is our land. We only hear Rohinya’s right from UN.
The problem of Islam is not only in Myanmar, it’s worldwide.
They ask their rights and freedom in non muslim country but they do not respect non muslim people’s right. They want to replace freedom with Sharia. Do they deserve this rights I ask myself sometime! They are not happy in Muslim countries and they only want to be the Western world for their freedom.

    • My experience growing up in a family of different faiths is quite the opposite from yours. My father was a Christian and divorced when he married my mother, a Muslim. They had a civil marriage and they didn’t convert to each other’s religion. My Muslim mother attended American Baptist Missionnary school in Shan State and she graduated from Judson college. At Judson, she attended church with her Karen friends. My mother’s knowledge of the Bible was better than her knowledge of the Koran because she did not understand Arabic although she could read the Koran. My siblings and I were raised to believe in God (Christians,Muslims and Jews all believe in God, the Creator), and to respect people of all faiths. We were also given the freedom to follow any religion when we get older. I am a Christian and my spouse is Buddhist. One of my brothers is also Buddhist. I have many cousins who are Buddhists, Christians and Muslims and we get along very well. I have Buddhist girlfriends who married Muslim men but they do not convert to Islam. Their Muslim husbands sometimes even attend Buddhist ceremonies with them. To me, integrity, character and moral values of an individual is more important that their religion. Just because Gautama Buddha is enlightened doesn’t automatically make his followers enlightened. U Wirathu for one is certainly far from being enlightened.

      • I congratulate to you and all your family for tolerance and respect of each other belief. Really nice to hear this and hope other will take example from you. If in “modern” Islamic world, your mother will be stoned to death for “Apophasis” for going to church.
I am married to Christian and we both keep our religions, I follow my wife to church sometimes, and she pray to monks when I offer lunch to them at my home (sadly under this new stupid law, my wife may have to change into Buddhist which I will protest). I have many muslim friends and we join their muslim day as well as they join us in Buddhist events, or chinese new years or Christmas. It was wonderful days but new radical Islam of younger generation is non tolerant and their radical action is overtaking the old secular muslim. The whole world is nervous about them (you can find these untolerant muslims in Pakistan and Bangladesh where Rohinya came from, and less in other countries, partly to blame on lack of education) so naturally the Arakanese are afraid about this also.
We can see this youngest of all great religion (first Buddhist, then Christian and Jew, then Islam) had spread from middle east till Spain and Indonesia! All locals are forced to change to Islam and to produce many children as possible.
We need to educate our people so that they will use their own brian and not follow these bogus monks.

  10. Pjitte Sar ” The Royal Jewels of Myanmar ” …..
If as Thamain Phone said “…This so called monk is a creation of Thein Sein’s government….. ” would be right — than one with Myanmar Historical background could imagine that Mr Wirathu just had used the Language of the Myanmar s Royal house of the past kings of Mandalay, which had a special quarter a bit out side where the ” Pjitte Sar ” were held. The ” Jewels of The Country ” .. these were the most beautiful women which were held there to be ” presents ” for what ever to foreign guests and they could use the .Pjitte Sar as they wanted. Maybe Mr Wirathu referred in this historical way to the UN Mrs Lee. Of course today with the modern word of the old time ” Pjitte Sar ” he used the commend word of ” whore ” …. Maybe we give Mr Wirathu a chance to let us know if he addressed Mrs Lee as ” jewel of her country — being one of the most beautiful…”
And the President in a way as a good King and loved by his people still need to commend on the situation., lets see if he takes a more modern or the historical approach. So long poor and more poor Mr Wirathu as when ever it gets quiet around him he must come up with something, loves the shine of the media , just every time he needs more force – need to care much about his health….

    • Oliver, I congratulate you, the Media that has translated from the Myanmar to the English – could have/may have and in most instances would have used the language that sells news – THE LADY’S A WHORE sells news. Why not get a person with the capacity to translate the speech and subject to a meeting with the Venerable Monk and to obtain his meaning of the words used.
As you have presented what is the home of the classical Mandalay Zagar, what we would refer to as the Royal Jewels of Myanmar and I am absolutely sure the Western Media would refer to them as WHORES, a word that titilates the western tastes and sells more papers – the forebears of todays media would have been a little more Gentlemen/discreet such as LADIES OF PLEASURE.

  11. >>this>>monk>>is >>a disgrace>>to Buddhism>>

  12. >>Highest Religious Body (Buddhism) in Myanmar>>should take action on him>>for his sexist slurs>>(to defame>>and disgrace)>>Buddhism>>

    The Body should act ASAP>>>

  13. It is shocking that a Buddhist monk is using words like that. He should be corrected by his superiors for using this harsh words. Anyway better a harsh word than bullets to kill innocent people.
That being said, one has to realize that it is now-a-days politically correct and above all safe to stand by the muslims. And that is what he possibly tried to point out. All over the world muslims try to get the upper hand, either by violence or by marriage and having as many children as possible.
Mind you, when the muslims are a minority they ‘preach’ tolerance towars other religions, but when they are a majority that changes in suppression. Beware!

  14. The government should shut his mouth before he derails the road to Democracy. If the government does not take action then I will have to assume that the Government has no guts to apprehend this guy, or is it that the government supports him. He is no monk but a foul mouth layman hiding under the yellow robe. Disrobe him and lock him up.

  15. The way that U Wirathu is preaching, he is inviting Al Qaeda and ISIS to enter Burma and he will certainly fulfill his wish sooner than he thinks.

  16. divide et impera: the neverending mantra in the failed state known as “myanmar”.

  17. Off the track , may be. U Wirathu is the only one who has the balls to defend Myanmar and Buddhism. He has the balls to speak his mind, and for that matter the mind of silent lambs. From Indonesia to Malaysia, Tibet to Nepal, Calcutta to Mumbai, Buddhism has been virtually wiped out. At the present time Islamic radicals seem having some resistance from Myanmar Buddhists in the likes of U Wirathu. He may not be polished, but he will defend his country and HER faith.
