Burma Govt Names Food Products Containing Dangerous Dyes

A notice in the Myanmar Alin newspaper on Thursday shows foodstuffs that Burma’s Ministry of Health found to contain banned dyes.

RANGOON — Burma’s health body on Thursday announced that nine foodstuffs currently on sale should not be eaten because they contain dyes that are banned from use in food.

The Ministry of Health published the notice in state-run newspapers stating that certain brands of products including mango jam, chili powder and curry powder contain potentially harmful ingredients.

The banned dyes were named as Sudan III, a dye giving a dark red coloring, Orange II, Rhodamine B and Oramine O. The notice said the nine foodstuffs were identified during inspections of public markets and shops inside schools.

The dyes are banned because studies have shown they may cause cancer.

According a 2005 review of the toxicology of food dyes by the European Food Safety Authority, Rhodamine B and Sudan II are both potentially genotoxic and carcinogenic. Conclusive evidence is lacking for Orange II, but genotoxicity cannot be ruled, according to the study.

In the notice, the Ministry of Health warned producers and distributors not to use unauthorized dyes in foods and said noncompliance would put them at risk of prosecution under the 1997 National Food Law.

  1. It is of course excellent when the Government and here possible FDA takes dangerous food products out of the shelf s and banns from sales, well done. So the same Government and FDA department banned since many years ” Mono sodium Glutamate ” for their well know reasons. Specially since Myanmar and here more the poor, are trained to over dose the whole on top of a possible danger to live and health.
    It is still than a miracle that FDA and the Government is in no way able to enforce the Law and Rules of the illegality of Mono sodium Glutamate and take it out from all markets and the great mobile teams of custom and who ever which were so active the past month have no clue how to enforce the law and have Myanmar people protected from an illegal item in and for food….
    On the other hand an in the whole world best known special Tea which is accepted world wide by top high standard Governments as FDA of US, UK, Germany or Australia – Singapore and celebrated in the culinary global industry as a top and healthy product for humans—- NO here Myanmar FDA rejects the Foreign Tea as not healthy to consume for Myanmar people….. I would love to know how these Myanmar FDA are so much better or have magic power that they find items in a food product – which the whole world does not find or does not know that they are harmful for humans ???? Congratulation to your Selective and very little to not transparent way of working at Myanmar FDA. At the other hand FDA does all and everything that competitive results by other associations and societies can not be produced in Myanmar as well FDA hinders such ” Independent Consumer Protection Efforts ” as well known and in media reported. Question remains what the real reasons are for such an ” Exclusivity ” in a modern democratizing Myanmar in transition – FDA did not get it with the transition and President Thein Seins all inclusive politics…
